Yes, one neighbor has a key, with another hidden on the property.

However, when visiting Home World the other day, I noticed that they now offer key pads on door locks. Cool idea. Who needs a key when you have a key pad?

Only leave one if you trust the neighbor.

Otherwise, we hide one in the back yard. Not around the door or window or under a mat. We put the key in a small jar and put it somewhere "secret".

It's a good idea to leave keys with a trusted friend. It's a smarter idea to have one available if you're locked out in the middle of the night, though. My wife's friend locked herself out of her condo at midnight. She walked in 30 degree temperature to our house about 1.5 miles away, in a nightshirt. You'll get locked out at the most inopportune times.

While I was getting ready for work one morning, I noticed my tire was flat. I was wearing my robe and my hair was wrapped in a towel. I went outside and changed my tire. I locked my keys in the trunk when I was putting the jack away. There I was locked out of my car and my apartment while wearing a robe and my hair wrapped in a towel. I can't remember how I solved that problem. I just remember feeling defeated.

I got locked outside after skinny dipping in my own pool, had to go to neighbors house in a towel to call a locksmith and borrow a robe.

Gave one to my kids, they live five minutes away. Never lock the doors except when I go out of town. However, last year I did lock the door(don't know why) and when I came home, the garage door opener didn't work and my kids were out of town so I had to break a door to get in. Now I DO carry my house key with me!!!!!!!

No neighbor has keys, also have no 'extras' hidden anywhere. But I've thought about the second idea.

My house and car keys are together. If I lose them -- I couldn't start the car to get home anyway. I used to carry a second car key, but haven't put it back in my purse since changing pocket books years ago. Besides if the second key is in my purse and I lock the purse in the car, I'm still screwed and would need a locksmith. (And with newer cars it's harder, if not impossible, to lock yourself out)

Maybe I'll get around to hiding that second house key this year.

What about when no electricity to open the garage door?
I don't get how that would likely be an issue. Unless a hurricane hits what are the chances someone will lock themselves out -- AND the electricity goes out? And if a hurricane, tornado or fire does hit -- you won't need a key to get back into what's left of the house anyway.

We don't have hurricanes and tornados much here. Our electricity goes out during high winds, thunderstorms, blizzards, and ice storms. Sometimes the electricity is out for days. It's very easy to get locked out while the power is out. All you have to do is come home while the power is out. Not everyone arrives home via a car. Some people use the bus. Some people ride with friends to events.

I lock my keys in the car in my driveway more than I lock myself out of the house. Almost always it's when I'm getting stuff out of the trunk. I set my car keys down in the trunk to grab bags and forget to pick up the keys before I close the trunk.

That's funny! It reminds me of when I noticed my son's friend caught his pants on fire in our yard. I was leaving the bathroom at the time and glanced out the window. I ran outside stark naked. If a kid is on fire, there's no time to grab a towel. In hindsight, a towel would have been useful for smothering the fire. Fortunately, my son is a quick thinker and pushed his friend down to the ground and rolled him around. By the time I got there, the fire was out and I was standing in the middle of my yard naked. Fortunately, the kids were so distracted by what happened, they didn't notice. The neighbor got a good look though.

Don't know any of our neighbors, even if I did I wouldn't trust anyone with an extra key to my house. I make a point every time I get our of a car or leave the house to check that my key are hooked to my pants, never lost them yet don't plan on it.
