Has anyone had experience with having ductless a/c installed.

I want a a 1200btu ductless a/c Mitibushi installed in garage.
They want $3500.(they gave a quote with a 13 seer)

Since I have seen 16 seer is recommended esp.since we live in the south.I will go with the seer 16.

What should my total cost be.

Thanks.

If you really want a split-system for the garage go the cheapest route possible. Buying a 16SEER unit won't afford you anything additional- here's why:

Garages are NOT INSULATED!
If the walls and ceiling aren't insulated you're not "saving" anything with an additional/higher SEER rating. If you just want to cool it down to work inside get a window unit and pop a hole in the side of the garage. Or better yet, get a fan!
Swamp cooler?

This should probably be in the House Forum- not interior design.

Thanks.

We are only doing for our dogs. So the seer 13 seems OK.

for the most part the SEER really has very little to do with how WELL it keeps a space cool. Both a 16 or a 13 SEER that provide the same amount of BTU/hr of cooling will keep the same space with the same heat load at the same temperature. SEER really just affects efficiency. One of them will use more energy than the other but the end result is the same.

Er, 1,200 btu? I'm not sure you can cool a doghouse with 1,200 btu's. I'm sure you mean a 12,000 btu A/C. Why can't you just get a window unit for $300? After all it's just for your dogs, you don't have to get the temperature down to 72 degrees, which would be comfortable for you. Just keep the room in the low 80's, they will more than happy with that.

Even though split ductless A/S units are more energy efficient then a window air conditioner, it's going to take a very long time to break even cost wise to justify the difference in price between the two, maybe never, considering the size of the space your cooling.

Ice Makers | Refrigerators | Wine Coolers | CompactAppliance.com I bought a 1 ton standalone heat pump for my two car garage for $500 delivered. It plugs into a standard outlet and you just need to cut a 4" hole in an exterior wall for the exhaust. I live in the Southeast with routine 95 degree days and 80-90% humidity. It makes the garage comfortable in the summer and winter.
