For me it can depend on the house...I've had each in bedrooms and living rooms.
Right now, I have hardwood (no rugs at all) on all the first floor living space, LR, DR, Kitchen (high end vinyl tile in the powder room and laundry room)...and carpet upstairs in all the bedrooms.
But at another house I own it's all parquet floor, with only very small throw rugs (2'x3') for stepping out of bed.
I prefer hardwood. I like the look, it's easy to run a dust mop over to clean, and I can add pops of color with area rugs. At one point I had a purple area rug that looked great with the furniture. But purple carpet would have been silly.
Another vote for hardwood, with large area rugs. Make sure you have good padding -- for LR/family room, often people are sitting/lying on the floor, watching TV.
