I turned on my heat this morning to get the chill out and ALL of my smoke detectors went off. Needless to say, it scared the crap out of me ! I immediately switched form heat to a/c and the smoke detectors turned off.

Could it be that the heat hadn't been used and the smell is what set off the smoke detectors ?
Or is there a problem with the smoke detectors?

They have gone off once before when I was smoking in a small room with the windows closed.

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with this type of thing ??

Sounds like you had a lot of dust in the ducts near the furnace. Has there been construction in your area since last winter?

Your problem likely stems from a summer's accumulation of dust in your duct work.

Why not call your furnace company and arrange for a duct cleaning and inspection of the furnace? Clean ducts and a new filter will improve your furnace's effeciency over the upcoming heating season.

Thank you both for confirming my thoughts ! I am pretty much sure that is exactly what is going on.
It did "smell" like the first heat of the winter, but I didn't think the detectors would pick it up because it wasn't smoky.
I will have someone come clean my unit, it's probably that time anyways.

Thanks Again !
