I am of the frame of mind that finds coffee tables unnecessary and cluttery. But I do have a lovely coffee table with a class top that I would like to find another purpose for. Has anyone ever "re-purposed" a coffee table? Perhaps build it into something else?

Although I agree glass coffee tables are junk. I have a solid wood sturdy coffee table you could stand on if you wanted to. We use it to hold the remotes, drinks, on rare occasions eat in front of the tv, put you feet up on it, do crafts with the kids, other misc projects.

I would never give up the coffee table. Extremely useful.

I want to get a coffee table book that turns into a coffee table like Kramer invented on Seinfeld.

I use our coffee table, which we had made for us by an amateur woodworker many years ago. It is made of cherry with a round top. My grands set their toys up on it now. When they were little, I never had to worry about them falling and hitting their heads on a corner. I consider it ideal. It works well with our reclining sofa and chair.

I've never repurposed a coffee table, but I have repurposed a square, short end table, circa 1970. I broke china and made a mosaic top. I painted the rest of the piece in a sort of distressed white. It is still in use in the master bath, where it holds clean towels and washcloths.

I think with a rectangular coffee table, the best use might be as a bench unless the coffee table has a solid wood top, in which case, perhaps a woodworker could turn it into a nice end table.

Attach a fabric "curtain" to the edge, hanging to the floor, and see it turn into a hidey spot for your cats.

It it's sturdy, you can use it as a bench to sit on (Change out the glass for a piece of wood). Or put it against the wall and put your TV on it.

I have a round glass double bevel edge coffee table sitting on a pedestal. Visually, very pretty, as you can see the area rug under it.
Practical and friendly, Hell No!!

Since it is glass on a pedestal, it wobbles if you touch it. Not children friendly. But since we never really use our living room, its fine.

but if you feel you dont need or want a coffee table and can find better use for it, why not?

We have a neighbor who turned their glass coffee table into a potting bench outside. It was iron and glass so the weather doesn't bother it. She loves it.

For me a coffee table is an essential. We use ours all the time. We use it for food, drinks, puzzles, writing, drawing, laptops, etc.

If you don't want a coffee table, why not sell or donate it? Then put something you DO want in that space. That's what I would do.
