Anyone tell me why everyone pushes to have your chimney lined with a pellet stove? I haven't really found a reason.
I installed mine last year and stuck an 8 ft pipe up it, after that it's just the bricks in the chimney. If there is a reason, I'd consider doing it. I didn't at the time because they wanted $750 in labor to do it. I got the stove in the house, set up, and the 8ft pipe installed in about an hour and a half with one person to help (even with the liner installed, would not have come close to being worth $750 in labor).
I have a Quadrafire pellet insert. When I had it installed, the manual said it was ok to use a short piece of flex (5' to 8') to get above the damper, etc. That was an accepted installation method. The revised version of the manual no longer states that and calls for a full liner. I did the install with a full liner just for ease of cleaning.
Now, this was at my old house in PA. When I moved, I packed up the insert and it's sitting on a pallet in my garage here in FL waiting for me to get around to having a fireplace installed.
