The Kenmore HE3 washer/dryers are stackable and are very nice full sized (plus) W/d. Because the spin cycle is super fast in the washer, the dryer dries in the same amount of time as it takes to do a load of wash.
We had some wealthy friends who got the fancy European all in one set up. It did not wash or dry very well, but it cost a lot and made a nice conversation piece.
The other advantage of stackable is you can dry while washing and wash while drying.
We have the stackable units in our RV as the combo unit, which some were installing, we getting bad reviews, plus you can wash a load and dry a load at the same time using the stackable. The issue with bad reviews was long drying time and breakdowns.
There's 1000's of complaints online for the junk washers & dryers they're making today by brands that use to be reliable, just way too many complaints on multiple websites. If I were you I'd forget about having something compact afterall there will be occasions when you need a full size unit. So if I'm gonna spend hundreds of dollars for a W&D I want something dependable, non-HE (the complaints are horrendous & endless), I want knobs not digital computerized nonsense that breaks & the repair cost are 80% of the purchase price, so I'd recommend the Speed Queen brand & be happy for the next 20-25 yrs.
I had an Equator all-in-one for 8 years. We managed to clean the clothing of a family of 4 with that. The only thing I wouldn't wash in it was bulky items such as comforters. The cleaning cycle was great but the drying cycle was quite a bit slower than with an individual machine. We prefer air drying clothes when possible anyway so would put them on a rack to dry and then finish them off in the machine for 15 minutes to fluff them a little. Best of both worlds for us in terms of energy usage.
We moved recently and got a new machine when the old one didn't make it through the move. A 3.6 LG. It does wash wonderfully but feels almost wastefully big now - we do maybe 3 loads a week where we used to do 6.
