Find a DIY pest control store that sells the stuff the pros use. They'll be able to give you what you need and tell you how to use it. Gel baits that you put in cracks, crevices, and inaccessible areas (like the sides of kitchen drawers) will really do a number on them.
I have an exterminator out bi-monthly because my wife insists. She wouldn't let me tackle this on my own because we had palmetto bugs and a few roaches when we moved into our new house. It really freaked her out.
The exterminator took care of them with the gel bait, no spraying inside the house. They only spray outside around the perimeter. We haven't seen a bug inside the house in over 6 months. The exterminator kept replenishing the gel baits and no more roaches. The last few times he's found the baits have undisturbed, so he just replaces it with fresh stuff. It only costs $35 each time they come out every two months, so it's no big deal. My wife agreed to pay for it, so I don't care. It's actually nice that I don't have to worry about it.
