I did an area in my front yard in Az. last fall and love it. Depending on how it looks after the summer and the birds I'm sure spend time on it I'm probably going to do more this year. can't remember for sure what it cost but installed it myself.

My son's lawn was done by SYNLawn and cost $7.00 sq ft. installed. Typo in initial post said $1.00. Mea culpa.

I wanted to do this with my back yard too but I'm a little concern about health issues? Are these products safe in the hot summer?

100% safe. They're done all over in the desert areas of AZ where the temps reach up to 120 at times.

The only concern is to make sure they use the proper filler. After the grass is installed a filler is poured over the grass to complete the process. Some fillers are not safe for animals of humans to breath. Make sure you only buy filler safe for animals. See links for more info;

Our friends in AZ have artificial grass in their yard. In the front they have the realistic looking stuff-and it is VERY real looking. In the back they have more of the astroturf stuff because they wanted it to be easy to clean, etc. That looks fake, but they don't care because that was not what they were going for.

I don't know anyone who has artificial turf. After reading extensively about upkeep, I've learned that: you'll have to vac up debris, hose it down in hot weather if you want to walk on it with bare feet and will have to periodically treat it for mold if you live in a humid area. It may be less work than maintaining a lawn but, it's not maintenance free.

Mostly I've seen the odd looking, rug like artificial grass....at one home we drove by it was so real looking I thought
they must have a gardener, it fit perfectly over the shape of the yard....so I guess it can look real. The only grass we
have is a small yard in back for the peke...the front has no grass.
