Interesting.
That's why they say - one man's junk, another man treasure.
I know exactly the noise you describe. Loud bang when system turns on, then vibration from water running, then more bangs every time one station shuts and another one turns on.
And I have all the hardware right behind my bedroom wall.
See, I LIKE it. It tells me it's working. I had my share of system not kicking in for reasons various, and being obsessive, I'd rather hear that noise, then NOT hear it.
But yes, it's backflow preventer doing it's job plus shaking pipes. Good water pressure, good for you.
Like the other poster said - it's wrong time, wrong placement, likely, not deep enough and needs some insulation.
Screeching almost always involves some piece of mechanism. Too much pressure is a likely causal.
Things like pressure regulators do it. Perhaps a back flow valve but hard to see how.
Try a good plumber. This is more in their ball park than an irrigation guy.
First off you have every reason to check the water pressure in your house. Anything over 60 psi is excessive. Over 100 psi you are about to have a flood. Something is going to give and it may cause real damage.
If it is the pressure regulator and that loud you should be able to feel it by touching the valve...
UPDATE:
Well, it's going to have to be a plumber. The water department was out here today (their representative was very rude, I might add). She said the psi she measured was exactly 60. Am I paranoid to assume that in a city with abnormally erratic psi, she picked a number not one digit above or below normal? She refused to answer any questions or even come onto my property other than to hand me a paper with their official reading on it.
Go to a home center and buy your own water pressure gauge for $10 and test it yourself. They screw right onto the hose connection. They will be either in the plumbing general area or where their irrigation stuff is.
