In about a week from now, our house will be about 2 years old, and coincidentally, one of our two air conditioning units is not cooling and making rattling noises. Unfortunately, my room is in the zone of the non-working unit. Our model is a Carrier CA16NA (builder's grade, I know).
Does anyone know what might be the issue here? Not sure if it is a refrigerant (R410A, the pink stuff) leak or not.
^^ with just under 2 years old isn't the warranty valid? I'd check with the builder and his sub-contractor. You're talking less then two cooling seasons (maybe ten months total) of use!

Yes, the warranty should still be valid. We registered it online through the builder, which according to them the warranty is 10 years.

Looks like the tech came over this morning, and it was discovered we had a slow refrigerant leak in one of our coils in the furnace, which was causing the pipeline to the outside unit to freeze up. They said they should get if fixed soon.
So, what was this rattling noise? It sounds like an evaporator coil replacement but a refrigerant leak wouldn't cause "the pipeline to the outside unit to freeze up."

Not sure what it was, since we had it turned off until the tech came over. And actually, I mentioned the same thing at HVAC-Talk.com, and they confirmed that this would actually cause this: Carrier air conditioner not cooling and making rattling noises
From what I read elsewhere, a lack of refrigerant will actually cause the refrigerant line to freeze up. Since we likely lost most of our R410A refrigerant due to the leak, this is likely the reason why the line is freezing.
"Yep" isn't much of an answer. A loss of refrigerant means a loss of cooling and you will eventually notice this. If you see a heavy "frostback" on the tubing at the outside unit this usually indicates a low air flow situation at the evaporator inside. I'd have to hear this rattling noise.
