Our contractor did the stucco work on the exterior of our house. The chicken wire prep, etc. was okay over the pressboard but just putting the cement and stucco alone over the foam concrete blocks failed and now there are large cracks. He's clueless but I will be asking him to redo the sides of the house with the cracks. No one around here seems to know what to do with these foam concrete blocks!

You may just have someone who doesnt know the stucco "system" they're using..

In my area, we stucco over foam all the time. You will get some small cracks if you fill in a door or a window, but if you're doing an entire house, noticeable cracks are unusual.

The layers are - foam, tar paper, chicken wire, brown coat, finish coat..

It really doesn't crack unless you use the wrong materials..

My contractor obviously didn't know what to do, unfortunately. I hope he will correct the problem without a huge hassle and not disappear like the last contractor who had me purchase all the materials and never returned.

Well, I don't know about your contractor and I'd certainly question the above approach.

Your application is basically an EIFS installation. And I never seen "tarpaper" on top of the polystyrene. It's usually a nylon mesh with a thin coat/scratchcoat.

Take a good read-
