Remove the new handle and use a long screw with a nut on the other end. The new handle will then cover the nut when you put it back on, as it currently is covering the hole on the outside of the door.
I'm considering the plate idea. I'm not confident in my ability to sand the door down to bare metal so I can apply bondo (I read a few tutorials that said you had to remove the paint for it to work). A decorative plate might do, if I can find something like that.
I can't use the screw cover, although that's a great idea, because there is no screw - or, the old screw is long and a shorter screw would have nothing to screw into. Unless you think something like a plastic anchor that opens up inside the door would work to hold a screw in place...
???
This is a metal door correct? You use the right size metal screw.
