I'm back...this time with an oven problem!

All of a sudden, my electric oven (approx 12 years old) is burning everything on top. For example, the same frozen pizza that we've cooked a hundred times at a certain temp and time with normal results is now getting burned on top well before the prescribed cooking time has elapsed. Any ideas?

<and rhetorically, does anything last more than 10 years!>

Your oven temperature is controlled by a thermostat, a replaceable part. If you are confident working on electrical devices, do a YouTube search on replace oven thermostat

Sounds like you are broiling everything! Maybe your baking element has gone bad. Personally, I would just get a new oven but supposedly they are fairly easy to fix.

Possibly the selector is turning on the broil element at the wrong time.

Might not be worth fixing.

You might put an oven thermometer in the oven and see if the temperature is not what you're setting on the dial. You might then be able to compensate by lowering the setting until your oven totally bites the dust.

If you see an external temperature sensor rod, be sure it's not been bumped out of its normal position.

Can you lower the oven rack so that it is further away from the top burner?

Bob

Did the trick for our oven. It bakes better on one of the lower racks, and it cooks hotter than the dial reads. 325 degrees is more like 375 now. After 53 years it seems to have gotten a mind of it's own

Cool that you have a 53-year old oven! I doubt the new ones last that long.

Wow! 53 years! I had to re-read that to make sure I read it right! I'll give that a try plus pick up a thermometer. Need to figure this out before turkey day!

At any rate, you should get one of the thermometers that goes in the oven to confirm the temperature. Even brand new usually vary from the temperature it shows.

But, as was mentioned, the thermostat should be able to be changed.

It's the original...a 27" G.E. drop-in oven and range, but it's days are now numbered. I'm in the process of removing a wall between the small kitchen and den. Kitchen updates soon follow including another G.E. drop-in. I wonder if a new one will last as long as this one did? I doubt I'll be around to find out
