It filled with water but it won't go into next phase (agitate/wash?). I kept pulling the knob on and off and it made a grinding/cranking noise a few times but now it won't do that either. What could the problem be? And how am I supposed to get the water out now in order to see if something's stuck in the bottom. Thanks.

Yes, with a bucket. Or you could siphon it out with a length of garden hose.

It sounds more like the problem is with the timer mechanism than with something stuck, though.

I gotcha, thank you.

You're welcome!

Please let us know what the problem was when you get it fixed.

I would just get a better washer. Roper is Whirlpool's cheap apartment grade line; even the "budget" Amana line is a far better choice than Roper. The same goes with GE's Hotpoint line, as well as Electrolux's White-Westinghouse line. No offense to the OP.

My Kenmore washer recently needed a new timer. After reading a review on the new washers, I got the old one fixed. I did not need water saving (we are on a well), the odor problems with front loaders seem to be pervasive, and newer machines just do not seem to clean as well. I could not find a single model with universally good reviews.

If I ever need another timer, I can do it myself. I watched the tech do it, and it was very easy.

The OP could simply go to Craigslist and look for a better used unit; it doesn't have to be a front-loading or HE model. You can find great deals on used Whirlpool, Amana, Maytag, Kenmore, and GE units there. We are actually quite happy with our Samsung front loader; it does the job and we never had any issue with odors.
