Not sure if this is the right forum, so hopefully this is in the right spot.
I just moved from Syracuse NY down to Philadelphia PA. I had a hand-me-down full size mattress for the past 10 years, no idea how old it was before that. It had been getting progressively worse and I figured my move down here would be the perfect time to trash the old mattress and finally invest in a brand new one. I definitely wanted something bigger than a full size as well.
Was at the store last week and bought my new queen size mattress. I live in an old row home with narrow stair cases so I made sure to get the split box spring. The guys were just here trying to deliver everything when we ran into a major problem - the queen size mattress wouldn't fit up the stairs. They tried for a good 45min. They tried bending it as much as they could, using straps, etc. They got it about half way up and that's as far as it would go.
I've been sleeping on my couch for the past 2 weeks, was supposed to have the delivery this weekend but they canceled, so I'm pretty much on the verge of losing it at this point.
I don't know what to do and I don't know much about mattresses since this is my first purchase. My thoughts are that I don't want to spend a few grand on a full size because I don't want a full size and if I ever move out of this rental house where a queen can definitely fit, I want a queen. The delivery guys told me that the type of mattress I got just doesn't bend well - they gave me a few other brands that bend better but when I looked them up, they weren't good quality and were super cheap. I'm not a big fan of memory foam either. I believe there are split mattresses, but that would defeat the whole purpose of getting a larger mattress.
Mainly a vent I guess. I just don't know what to do. I'm wondering if I should just buy something second hand if I'm only going to get a full size. My contact at the store was off today of course, so he's calling me tomorrow when he's in. It doesn't seem like I have very many options - either get a full size or get a crappy quality queen?
Is this a rental? If so, keep the mattress you want. Move your sofa to the bedroom, and have your bedroom on the first floor. Move at the end of the lease. If you own this house and plan to never move, you have no choice but to buy a full size or a lower quality queen. Don't buy second hand because bed bugs have become a big problem.
Buy a Sleep Number mattress. It comes in boxes and you put it together. We've had a king size for 8 years and love it. We just moved from the Philadelphia area to Florida and we just took it all apart and put it back in the original boxes for the move.
In addition to being great to sleep on, being able to get it to any final location is easy.
I wouldn't buy a used mattress unless it was from someone i knew.
The Sleep Number is a good idea, but if that's a little price-y, i'd buy a cheaper full size mattress. From an off-price furniture store or similar. Don't spend a ton. I have a mattress I originally bought as a cheap guest room mattress, then used as my primary mattress for about 8 years, and is now back in the guest room. I get more comments about how comfortable it is.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions! This is a rental house, but I don't plan on moving for at least a few years if I can help it. I've moved 5 times in the past 4.5 years, so am pretty tired of moving. I would like to stay put in this rental if/when I'm ready to buy in Philly.
The Sleep Number is probably out of my price range. I paid around $2500 for the queen mattress, split box, frame, protector, and delivery. I'd like to keep it around that price range if at all possible. Other people are suggesting a foam mattress, so maybe I shouldn't rule that out. I slept on one a handful of times and slept horribly, which is why I never considered them.
I'd also look into a memory foam mattress. Look for a place where you can return exchange it and give it a try for a week or 2.
Do split queen mattresses even exist? I know the box springs do, but what about the actual mattress? A twin box spring won't fit up the stairs, so getting a split king isn't an option.
