Have you checked out both companies with the Better Business Bureau or Angie's List to see if there are any issues? If they check out okay it sounds like the cheaper bid is the way to go considering your budget. It sounds like you're going to get what you want for a very fair price. BTW, when we got bids for our kitchen remodel they were all over the place, as well.

Custom cabinets are nice but since you are on a budget, save yourself the extra money and go with what's in stock. That is awesome that you will be able to get the kitchen you want at a price you can afford!

The thing with custom is they are custom.

My friend was going with very nice stock cabinets and I mentioned the custom guy in town... small shop of 12.

On a lark, he had the owner come out and was surprised he could get the custom for 10% less than the nice stock... the real saving is he ended up with more usable space... the stock had several filler pieces or blind cabinets due to the kitchen layout.

The custom uses every inch of space and the install went very fast because individual sections would have been several individual cabinets going stock.

I've done both and like both for simple layouts.

I really pay attention to hardware, door and drawer details.
