My husband and I are debating the electrical wiring for the dishwasher. It's along a wall that has a 2' sandstone foundation below it. It's placed in a location where we can't pull wires where wires are already located. To put the outlet in the wall requires tearing apart and rebuilding the sandstone foundation to get to the wall.
I'm trying to encourage my husband to run the wire up through the floor and into the cabinet next to the dishwasher. He is insisting on tearing that foundation apart to "DO IT RIGHT." I see pictures all over google images of outlet boxes in cabinets. People do this for peninsulas. Is it really not "done right" if it's in the cabinet instead of the wall?
We have a friend who is an electrician but my husband refuses to call him, mostly because our friend will insist on coming and doing the work for us. They are very close friends since childhood. My husband knows if he calls just to ask a question, he'll come and my husband doesn't want to impose since he's quite capable of running wire for an outlet himself.
Since we only have one day per week to work on the kitchen, this foundation endeavor can set my kitchen back a few weeks. I know because this isn't the first time we've had to tear out and rebuild the top of the foundation to access areas for various reasons.
Are there any electricians out there who can tell me that going into the cabinet isn't wrong?
I don't believe we need to mess with the foundation. I've found on the internet that dishwashers can be hardwired directly to the circuit breaker box. My husband is making this a harder job than it needs to be.
I got the in user guide for our dishwasher. It provides instructions for the outlet but it also says the following:
"For a permanently connected dishwasher:
The dishwasher must be connected to a grounded metal, permanent wireing system, or an equipment grounding conductor must be run with the circuit conductors and connected to the equipment grounding terminal or lead on the dishwasher. '
That means it can be hardwired. Don't think this will be harder. The dishwasher doesn't come with a plug. That's an additional kit. So the wiring still needs to be done to the dishwasher one way or another.
If we hardwire it, the wire doesn't have to come up through the wall. It can come up through the floor under a nearby cabinet.
Come on. Someone tell me my husband doesn't need to be messing with my foundation. LOL
I called the zoning office. She said it's a question for an electrical inspector and gave me numbers for different ones. I talked to two people. Both said it can be run through the floor. The electrical inspector said it didn't need to be inspected if my husband knew what he was doing. I gave him a rundown on my husband's electrical experience via helping his friend wire our house and via helping his friend through the years with jobs when he was short handed, and the electrical inspector said it would be fine and doesn't need to be inspected.
Creating this thread helped me figure out on my own how to get the answers to my questions!
My dishwasher is powered by a generator under the sink. I didn't want to run wires down to the basement.
Is it noisy? Does it have it's own grounding? Why didn't you want to run wires to the basement?
Our electrical box is only about 20' away from where the dishwasher will be located.
