When I was in my teens I thought that, in a pinch, there wasn't any problem with using a paper towel as toilet paper and, in fact, this could be considered manly and John Wayne would probably give me a pat on the back for being so resourceful and insensitive.
Well, when my mother called the plumber due to the washing machine backing up he ran a power snake into the main cleanout and recovered... John Wayne toilet paper.
It could be any number of things, but you have an obstruction somewhere below the sink and it should be a fairly simple matter for a plumber to fix.
Thank you!! Is there anything I can try before calling the plumber?
I know absolutely nothing about the layout of your home's plumbing, but you could try to pour about a cup of bleach down the sink and let it sit for at least a few hours, preferably overnight (it will function in a virtually identical manner to Drano or Liquid Plummr at a fraction of the cost) to see if that improves anything, but if the clog is inorganic it will be ineffective.
If you have a hand snake you could try going in from the cleanout outside... You might get lucky.
Your hand snake is probably a 1/4 or 5/16" maybe 25 feet long. A plumber will have a 1/2 inch cable in 10 foot sections and motorized. Quicker job and better.
