Check your local building supply center. You can see what you are getting and many times it is no more or not enough more than online to make a difference. Besides, your local store is the one that supports your community.
There is no such thing as 'an affordable' house supplies store, big box or neighborhood hardware. EVERYTHING is expensive. I recently had to replace the valve in the shower. Went to home depot, dozens hanging in plastic. As I got to my model #, I stared in disbelief, $39 for a shower valve.
Know exactly what you are buying, THEN internet shop for the best price. Sometimes the shipping charges bring the cost up to what you can buy local. Its also much easier to return something when its a local store.
There is a couple of places in my area that sell old, rejected and damaged stock. That's the best place I've found for deals but it's like playing the lottery. I picked up a 12 foot formica counter top for about $20, it had a factory defect with 4 foot on the one end with the formica misaligned and folded. I only needed 5 foot of it though and they charge about $60 for a 6 foot piece new so it was a great deal.
