Haven't had one for 10 years and can't see the point, really. Not with a gas stove.

Since every kitchen I go into has one, I hardly think the microwave is "done".

I agree, many homes even have them built in above the stove....I have one that "talks"...tells you
when food is ready....love the microwave..

I use mine mainly for defrosting. According to cryogenics research, faster defrosting preserves the quality better than slow (because slow involves melting and re-crystallizing and melting again within the meat).

For the same reason, the faster the meat is initially frozen the better will be the quality later. Quickly freeze, quickly defrost.

I've had my microwave for about 13 years. It's a plain, white Magic Chef model. I've used it every day that I've had it and amazingly I've never even had to change the light bulb. It also still spins the glass plate inside like it always has. Aside from the light and rotating plate feature it's nothing fancy and about as plain as can be. It has a dial that you use to set the time, and a bell rather than any artificial noise to let you know it's done. Aside from the timer dial and button latch to open the door it has nothing else on the outside. In the last few years I've been noticing newer models with complicated keypads, displays, special settings and lots of fancy features. I always tell myself I'll get one of those whenever this one dies, but it's still going, with no signs of slowing down yet.

We use our microwave mainly to defrost things, or do a quick reheat on some leftovers.

I can't stand microwave popcorn though - not since we rediscovered the joys of popping popcorn on the stovetop! We bought a stainless steel popcorn popper and high quality popcorn kernels and we use a smidgen of coconut oil and a sprinkling of salt - WOW! It tastes fantastic! And it doesn't stink up the house.

The built-in gets used once in a blue moon. It will get replaced by a salamander or second wall oven in fall.
