The OP said in another thread that they haven't started the house yet.

This is one of those things I'd rely on professionals for. There are tons of home plans out there already. It makes far more sense to pick one and tweak it, than to start from scratch with no experience.

I am for tradition in the sense guests should be able to use a utility room, and not your kids or your bathroom. A girlfriend should be able to sit and drink coffee with you in a reserved area with a window overlooking the garden. A walk way or small foyer leading into the house. Lastly, a formal study or dining room. These are the elements that make a house a home, in my opinion.

I am not traditional in a major way regarding bathrooms. I don't want to share a bathroom with my husband. I want every bedroom to have it's own bathroom. Your husband's man room (where you put him when he wants to vegg out and watch tv all night and you want peace and quietness), should have a bathroom in case he produces odors, as most men do. Make sure each bathroom has a window, airing out should be done properly, via a window, not into your house. Excuse the bluntness in this last part. Just sharing a few things important to me, as I'm saving up for a house down the line and these are the things that come to my mind.

Just an observation. I thought that the water features in the house should be lined up and back to back in order to have vent stacks work properly, sewage to 'flow' the way it needs to, and hot water lines to be more easily insulated.
