I helped my neighbor evaluate the financial aspects of various systems for a retirement home he built. In every expected scenario we found it is cheaper to spend the money to run a line to a grid source than make the changes to be self sufficient.

He and his wife chose to ignore the financials and invest in propane, solar, and wind as well as passive construction techniques. They have changed their mind after only two years seeing that the lifestyle compromises as well as long term maintenance of the systems will not give them what they wanted.

They are still very much into trying to be self sufficient but have concluded that with today’s technology it is cheaper to buy reliable power. The issue they face now is the difficulty in borrowing the money to run a power line and convert their house.

Bottom line… there may not be savings in many situations.
