What is the best type of door hinge (external) for a coastal area? Is it stainless steel?

If so, where is the best place to buy hinges in bulk?

Thanks in advance!

Brass is commonly used in marine environments, but there are a lot of different purposes for hinges, loads, environments, etc.
The question may be better asked of manufacturers.

Are you near a Habitat for Humanity ReStore? You can get hinges for $0.50. Nice brass ones too.

I own a historic home and when we bought the house, the French doors to the back parlor were missing. Left me two hinges though. I bought replacement doors (from ReStore) as well as matching hinges. Got some nice ones. Plus I really wanted hinges Made in the USA (it's just a thing I have about hardware for my house).

By "external" I'll assume you are referring to reverse swing doors (swing out); which means the hinges are exposed to the exterior(?)

If that is in-fact the case, you have two choices. There is stainless steel and baked on enamel or epoxy finish. The most important part is getting the correct hinge- most exterior door hinges are 4" and have square corners; versus interior hinges that are 3.5" and have radius corners. The other thing is non-removable hinge pins.

Price wise you're looking at anywhere between $28-35 for SS and $26-30 for the enamel/epoxy. That's for a set (2). Which of course is aggravating as Hell because most doors have 3!

Might be aware that most of the "brass" hinges these days are steel plated with a brass finish. They won't hold up to any salt air. Stainless is the way to go but I have seen galvanized hinges with stainless pins that did pretty good in salt air.

Commercial buildings have the very best doors, hinges, and locksets. That is because the doors are opened and closed so much - in some cases thousands of times a day!

Might want to go around and look at some of those...

Thanks all for the very helpful replies.

K'ledgeBldr - you are absolutely right, I am referring to reverse swing doors. I think you may have hit on something though, the hinges currently in place are 4", but have radius corners, not square! Also, each door has 4 hinges! More than "aggravating as Hell"!!

I will certainly take all your comments into consideration in my hunt.

I'm not quite sure why it would be "More than 'aggravating as Hell'!!" because if there are 4 hinges per door, that would just be 2 sets instead of a set and a half. Check at your local full service Lumber Yard instead of the "Big Box" stores. We have always sold our door hinges in sets of 2 (pairs), but if you needed a pair and a half, we would open a box, take one hinge out along with half the screws, close the box and mark it clearly with a 1/2 and put it back on the shelf for the next person who needed an odd number of hinges. But then we don't have a computerized checkout system. We write the receipts up on a receipt pad and give the customer the top copy.

Just be careful. Just because the new hinge has radius corners doesn't mean it will match. There are multiple "standard" sizes for the radius.

Only because it means there are more hinges to change!! Instead of having 6 hinges per set of doors (or 3 pairs of hinges) we have 8 hinges (or 4 pairs) so it is more aggravating because of the extra hinges and extra cost. But I do see where you are coming from....

Thanks for the warning on sizes and corners. I will need to take one off to compare with any I find. I'll also look into the Lumber Yard option as well.
