Only when turned on does this spigot leak water (a drip every second) - not at the spout but at the knob. The connected hose is actually hidden by my hand in this pic. Anyway, is it missing a rubber gasket or something? I've removed the knob and single screw which goes right into the square control you see in the background. The water comes out from that square hole. How do I stop that from happening?

Some videos I've seen there's a packing nut and they also mention washers. But I don't think this is the same design.

I think the nut right by your thumb needs to be tightened. It has a washer or packing in it and may be close to worn out. Use a wrench to tighten that nut and it should stop the leak.
The other solution is to turn off the water and replace the faucet. cheap and easy.

Packing can either be a washer or impregnated yarn. Cut the water off, remove the valve body, replace both the washer and packing at the same time.
