My parents are considering adding a vacuum elevator to their home so as they age they can still use their upstairs master bedroom. It sounds good in theory. Does anyone have any real life experience with one of these?

I don't know much about them but imagine they'd keep ripping your clothes off everytime you went upstairs.

Why not buy a second vacuum cleaner for upstairs, then they won't need an elevator to get it upstairs.

That's exactly what I was thinking too, and then realized OP is talking about pneumatic elevators.

How reliable are they? What happens during a power outage? How is the ride compared to a hydraulic elevator?

So far no problems. It's important to know that these elevators have very few maintenance parts. With the exception of cleaning and some minor checking, there are no other items a homeowner needs to worry about.

During a power outage the elevator descends to the lowest level.

There is a slight noticeable lurch when it first ascends. There is also a slight cushioning bounce effect as it reached any floors above the lowest level. Once moving, it’s pretty much just an elevator.

One item that everyone considering these must know; they are not silent. If you have the turbine mounted on the top of the cylinders, it's like having a shop vac overhead when in use. This is the way most are installed. You have the option of locating the turbine away from the actual lift cylinder; I recommend this if considering a pneumatic elevator.

I just googled them. Those are pretty darn cool, I wish I had one in my house.
