The bypass "filter" is not a filter, it's just an adapter that goes where the filter goes so the water can run through where the filter is supposed to be. If you have a whole house filter or don't need or want the filter you can use that instead.

Whole house filters are far cheaper. Housing is about $30 which is one time purchase and you can 2 pack of cartridges for $10. They can do a hell of lot more water than that little rinky dinky filter on the fridge. Needs vary, we're on well water so we only have a cotton sediment filter. You can install two housings, one for sediment and the second with a carbon filter for taste.

Should be clockwise, "righty tighty, lefty loosey". Reverse threads can be found on some things where warranted like the left side pedal on a bike, that's so it can't unscrew itself while pedaling.

When my change "filter light" goes on, I reset it and go through another cycle. They don't need to be changed as frequently at the mfg would like you to do. The change light comes on with the number of door openings, not how much water is run through it. We are a two person household who don't use that much water. We could probably safely got three cycles before changing filters. Good way to double your money on filters...
...and buying in multiples also saves money, rather than one at a time, buy a three pack... Then your set for a couple of years or more..
As for the OP, I would cut one open and see if the insides are breaking up, that doesn't sound possible. I would think it's coming from some other source...??

FYI - We need a new word for "clockwise". Kids don't know what that means because everything is digital these days!

How about "Jelly Jar Lid Tighten"?
