The only time I noticed the Kirby was heavy was when vacuuming the stairs in our previous house - that was a major PITA. The Miele was much easier to use for this but probably any canister would have been. You're right that switching heads on the Kirby is a chore - it's one of the reasons we never used it on the hardwood floors.

I have Kenmore canister now, and I hate it. Also had on/off switch trouble with it - 100 to repair. It's louder than the Kirby ever was.
I don't think I could be in the same room with a vacuum louder than our Kirby.

I have a dyson animal and it has done an admirable job going up against 3 kids and 4 cats for 3 years. The only vacuum I have used that trumps it is the central vac in my new house, but thats apples and oranges.

I've owned a dyson DC14 for 4 months now and it is the best vaccumn ever! Is it worth $500? - maybe not but until someone comes up with a suitable competition it will go for that price. I love the fact that it is so easy to take apart when you have a clog (a kids toy or sock!) and clicks together with such ease. The one hand emptying of the chamber is nice and it seriously cleans like not other machine I've owned. I'm not so thrilled with the attachments it comes with . . but more attachments are avaliable on the website. The attachments may work just fine for most people though; I'm just picky

For those of you with central vacs, do you find that they have good suction? I had always assumed if they had to suck up 30 ft, they wouldn't be able to pull up everything?

Like you would not believe! the motor is so much more powerful than anything that can be put on a canister/upright vac (due to weight) and mine came with 2 wands, one with the heavy duty carpet head and the other with fine bristles to use on hardwoods/tile/etc. I just have to figure out what to do with my dyson
another plus is unless you are in the garage when it is running, it is barely audible....in the garage it is akin to a jet engine heheh

We have a Dyson - it's the best vacuum ever! I highly recommend making the investment for such an exceptional (and much used) product.

I fell for the bagless hype years ago and bought a vac. without listening to it first BIG MISTAKE. The darn thing was so loud that I had to wear ear mutes to vacuum. After much on-line research I bought a meile just about a year ago. It is great and so quiet I can vacuum my kids rooms while they are asleep. I go through bags a little quicker then a previous poster but I have a cat and two great pyrenees dogs running all over the place. Still though in a year I have only used 6 bags. (FYI.. you can actually pull the hair from pets out of a full bag and shake out the other dirt and reuse them too). The vac. was expensive but worth every penny with the retractable cord, quiet, ease of operation oh.. and when something gets stuck in the beater bar it Stops by itself and when you pull the problem out, you just push a button that is on top of the beater bar and off you go.This is a great feature with kids rooms to vacuum. good luck in your search.

I need a new vacuum but want to keep it under $200. My mother bought a Hoover Wind Tunnel and said it works great but I see only one post here for that. Anyone else try it?
