I add bleach too, especially when toilet will be unused for several days. It's clean when I return from a trip.

Problem I've recently (I guess because it's slightly warmer now in the summer) is the ring is just on top of the water line. So the bleach doesn't really get good contact with that area.

You can also get it at a swimming pool supply store. It's poured in pools to adjust pH level.

Muriatic acid! That's the answer. Use with care and well ventilated area. Cheap and extremely effective. I've used it for years and so do local plumbers.
