Just an update - it's been about a week since our kitchen was completely remodeled, and I LOVE IT. My husband was out of town for two weeks and when he left, everything was in chaos. When he got back and saw the kitchen, he was dumbstruck. He's amazed at the transformation and I am too. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT.

I am so happy for you. There's nothing better than loving what you did
Love to hear the "happily ever after" part of the re-model. No changes or tweaks you've identified yet? If so, kudos to you for reaping the benefits of all that hard work you did planning ahead of time!!

Good question. Actually, yes, I would have made one change that I've identified so far, but it's not a major one. I would have gone one shade lighter on the upper cabinets so the difference in cabinet color between upper and lower was more pronounced (two shades rather than one shade). But it's not a big deal.
As for functionality, I haven't identified a single thing I'd change yet, though I may switch my silverware drawer out with my dishtowel drawer. I still can't decide which drawer is best - LOL!
And we DID do tons of "footprint planning" beforehand. The contractor and subcontractor are both really thoughtful about this, and for that matter so is the cabinet maker. The three of us put our heads together and no one was afraid to tweak the whole thing with new ideas as we went along (for instance, the spice rack - which was actually my idea and such a cool one that they told me they are going to try to incorporate that in their upcoming projects!). We made changes mid project regarding the island (dimensions and built ins) as well, and my contractor surprised me (pleasantly) with an additional 8 inches of cabinet space and an extra row of drawers to the left of the sink, which was very nice. I was scared the entire time though because even though I measured it over and over again, it didn't look like my hutch was going to fit in the space that was left! It literally has 1/4 an inch clearance on either side...whew! But I love the extra cabinet space!
We really enjoyed a very open and flexible line of communication with our contractor and the subcontractors at all times. My favorite extra touch they offered was the nightly phone call recapping what had been done and forecasting what was going to happen the next day. This was the time we bounced ideas and concerns back and forth - and therefore there were no unpleasant surprises, beyond opening the boxes that held the sink and one light fixture and finding that there was some damage to them (both easily exchanged however).
All in all it was a very enjoyable and interesting experience with a terrific outcome!
It's wonderful that you are both enjoying your beautiful kitchen. Thanks for sharing your experiences with all of us.
What I'd really like is that bottle of energy you keep stored in that spiffy new spice cabinet/rack. Can you send me some of that? LOL
LOL that's one thing I have plenty of - if I could box it up and sell it I'd be a freaking millionaire.
Of course, my husband would also probably like for me to be able to get rid of some of this excess energy as well! At the least, it would save him some money.
