If I'm outside and available I will walk over and get it from him directly but I live in a quiet residential area. Otherwise if I am outside and busy I will still wave.

I have had all types of experiences with postal carriers. My current carrier will hand deliver it to me if I am outside, honk and walk to the door if I am not and the package is large. She will often take time to play with the dogs in the front yard for a couple minutes if the weather is nice.

I have had carriers who insist on only using the box. Many years ago, I had a carrier who would hand it to me at the box and one day a substitute carrier was on the route and instead of explaining his preference simply pushed my hand away and reached for the mailbox without saying a word to me. I felt he was very rude.

I recall another carrier that drove slowly down the street so he could spray any dogs that approached with his pepper spray. He made a lot of enemies for white vans on my street. It took years for the dogs to stop being aggressive toward delivery people and mailmen.

We had a dog who hated the UPS man and only the UPS man. USPS and FedEx were fine.

A police car sirens on, an Ambulence with sirens on, a Fire Truck with sirens on and a Post Office truck approach a four way intersection at the same exact time.

Who has the right of way?

I've been handed my mail by the mail carrier, when I ran up to them to give them mail to be mailed, and he gave me my incoming mail. This has happened several times, in different cities where I've lived. There doesn't seem to be a law against it.

No; as long as they recognize you as living at address.

None. They all yield to Chuck Norris.

The issue is when the customer's mail is in the back of the truck in the bottom tray(s) behind everything. I would have to virtually tear apart my whole truck to get the mail--lol. The mail is not all in the same tray.

I have no problem giving mail to someone in the yard, or holding out a check for someone and maybe dropping it off on the way to my route.

I probably made my self sound like an ogre.

When your carrier is in a hurry and has to do part of another route after his, and get back by 5 or else--then there's a problem with stopping to retrieve mail for someone who's only going to complain that you just gave them junk. Were you expecting something important? No? Then why did you stop me?

Or, your carrier may work for a dictator of a postmaster who monitors all the hits on his/her MSP scans to see the time variations (there are barcodes in several mailboxes that we have to scan. They show what time we were there).

But, for the most part, if my supervisor saw me stopping to sort through mail to give to someone out of sequence- I would get into trouble. They would call it a "time-wasting practice." And every time I went a few minutes over, it would be assumed that I was just doing "favors" for customers. My office is not big on customer relations, lol.

Most carriers want to be friendly and accommodating, but there are some customers who take advantage of it.

I have a large apartment complex on my route in which the parcels are all left at the office.

They asked me if I could drop the packages off at the beginning of my route because I actually don't get to the delivery until mid-afternoon.

My boss told me not to. I started to do it anyway, because it's a nice way to make space in my truck as well. Also, the people in the complex are elderly and I often deliver needed medication.

The supervisor checked the variations in my MSP scans and my street time. I was busted for a time wasting practice.

Yikes.

As for the right-of-way idea: One of my coworkers got into serious trouble with the fire department over that.

I was told by a postal inspector that we are not supposed to hand the person the mail even if we know them. This was in an apartment complex with a large cluster box.

Seems silly really.

If I'm out front my mailman will hand it to me as I walk toward the box.
