I think all the info given here is good. But I would recommend visiting a locally owned paint store. Someone there can point you to products and give you step by step advice. You can also buy any needed supplies there. I'd want to use some sort of mechanical sander for this project though. Hand sanding is hard and tedious. If you don't have a steady hand, then perhaps your DH or someone else who is experienced could help you with that.

I think Tung oil is often used on furniture these days as a finisher. I don't know if that is a good choice for pine.

Good luck!

Hi all, thanks so much for all your replies. I apologize for just responding now. We have a 3 month old that has been taking up a lot of our spare time
If I have the time, I was going to tackle this project this coming spring. I don't want to be out in our garage in the freezing cold doing this type of project. Especially being a newbie at it.

Also, just out of curiosity, if I wanted to hire someone to refinish this table and benches, how much would it roughly cost me? I would love to do it myself, but if it's a time issue...i wonder if it would be more cost efficient to hire someone. Thoughts?

Thanks again!

I have no idea what furniture refinishing costs in your area, but keep in mind that you're probably going to have to get custom cushions made for those benches - and those are not going to be cheap. The cost of custom upholstery is often pretty shocking - but it's also usually well worth the cost when it comes to both aesthetics and quality.

Unless with heavy dents I would lightly sand to remove the finish but not the stain. Match stain and wioe lightly with new. The pick your fprotective finish Gloss, semi, satin or matte polyurethane.

Whether a short or long cure stop all air flow in the finishing area. No air movement for at least 30 minutes. Clean the surface with tack cloth and apply protective finish per directions.

Let dry and repeat.

Stopping air flow in an area is perhaps the best thing you can do to assist with a great particle free finish.

Hope this helps.
