I am in the process of shopping for a replacement above-the-range microwave. I do a lot of ethnic asian cooking, which has a lot of stir-fry and oil/steam, so I think I want a microwave that not only has a fan to recirculate air but one the vents to the outside. I can't easily tell which ones have this feature. I believe I already have a hole in the wall that vents out but can't tell if my existing microwave has that feature.
Can anyone recommend a good model of 30" microwave that vents to the outside.
almost all of them have that feature, ask the salesperson, and ask to read the manual before you purchase it. From what I remember, been a few years since I sold appliances, they come with a kit for outside venting.
I like the sharp carosels. the easiest way to tell if you have one that vents outside is look, on the outside of the house opposite where the microwave is installed. Do you see a metal hood, it may be on the roof if not on the wall? Also if you turn the fan on a recyled air unit will blow air into the kitchen from the vents on the hood. Normally on the front above the hood or microwave.

I meant a kit to hook up to duct to outside, my bad.
Check out the latest Consumer Reports (February 2008). It has a review of microwaves & ranges. Their favorite over-the-range microwave is made by LG (model #LMV2053[St]).
All space-saver type (over the range) micro's are capable of exterior venting. An adaptor comes with the micro to make it function. However, pipe, elbows, etc. are on you.
However, I will say this- for the type of cooking you described I won't recommend a space-saver micro/vent. These units don't have a high enough cfm rate for that type of cooking.
I have had several asian buyers over the years that ALWAYS up graded to vent hoods that were specifically designed for that type of cooking. These units could pratically suck the shirt off your back. Right off hand, I can't remember the manufacturer- but I'm sure a Google search will turn up something (try "wok cooking").
