I don't think you would be happy with any sort of a drop down top: it would be unstable and that would restrict access to the drawer(s) below. Try just sitting askew for a couple projects to see how it goes. If you look at the top, the flat part seems to begin an inch or two from the edge due to the rounded design. What if you added a 3/4 inch plywood top that merely extend beyond that ,plus the depth of the drawer handles which would extend into the hall or room space anyhow? It would certainly make more sense ergonomically as you not have to reach in as far to the flat working surface. ....and you could put a cheap piece of foam tubing like a foam pipe insulation tube or swimming pool noodle over the leading edge for arm and wrist support and also reduce the chance injury if you brush or bump against it .
Please post some pix of what you end up with.

Good ideas. Yeah, I couldn't think of any way to make a fold down work space that would be solid. I do like the idea of creating a little bigger flat surface area, though. I'll see how it works for me, and keep that option open.

I'll gladly post pics, though I 'm a little afraid of the Save the Dresser people LOL. From where I'm sitting now with my laptop in my chair, I can see the back of part of the dresser. It extends into my living/sleeping space a bit, as the wall it's against is too short. But, it creates a kind of extended wall and my dog's crate fits behind it, and my chair next to that. So, because I'm looking at the ugly back of part of the dresser, I've decided to paint the back of the dresser to match my decor. Again, it won't hurt the dresser, and I'm just going to use Old English furniture polish on the old wood to try and cover some of the scratches, etc.

But, the back side will be painted, so when I have to wheel it around (long story why I will have to move it around sometimes), and it's in the middle of the space sometimes, the back of it will not be ugly.

So, tomorrow, I paint the back, and the pegboard kit is on the way, and then when I can see what I'm dealing with, I'll figure out the back brace and probably paint that, too.

I can't wait to get this set up and actually be able to find my tools and start my old hobby back up!
