Strange noises in both my bathrooms after toilets are flushed... a few weeks after we had the Roto Rooter guy come and clear up a plug. I didn't notice it immediately after the Roto Rooter job, but we weren't having the issue before the job.

The upstairs toilet bangs once or twice after flushing, and the banging occurs BEFORE the toilet tank fills and the valve shuts off. So, I don't think it's "water hammer." In fact, the banging is louder depending on what you are flushing (er, not to be too gross, but certain flushdowns are bigger than others, etc). This is what really concerns me! The problem seems to be with the exit pipe (somewhere under the floor beneath the upstairs toilet), not with the water intake.

Meanwhile, in the downstairs bathroom, the downstairs toilet takes longer to flush, and when it does, there's a loud bangy burbling from the bathtub opposite. (This bathtub is directly under the upstairs toilet.)

What could be causing these noises? They definitely seem related.

(The Roto Rooter guy only put in a snake in from the outside trap to the lowest pipes in our basement, so I don't think the snake went up as far as the area of the banging.)

Do your drains go to a macerator pump? It sounds like they might.

I don't have a basement bathroom. I have a 1st floor and 2nd floor bathroom.

I have no idea if there is a macerator pump or not. Is this something I could see in the basement where all the pipes go?

Our house was built in the 1950s.

When Roto Rooter was out there to fix the plugged drain, apparently something must have occurred that wasn’t foreseen at the time depending on “how or what” he had to do to clear the drain. You might want to re-contact them to run a camera down the drain and “see” what’s there that might be making the noise. Something simple like prescription bottle or something else that may have been dropped into the toilet long ago and wasn’t cleared out all the way on the last visit. The camera will show most anything that is causing the noise.

I'd be calling your "roto-rooter" and getting them back out-
"Didn't have this problem before, but since you came..."

Not satisfied with the job.
