Wow - I cant believe the responses - I always answer my door and phone if I can - I must be Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm or something - I guess I have always lived in nice neighborhoods with no fear and friendly neighbors - Of course I will look out the window first to see who it is and then ask them what they want before I unlock the door.
I live in a wonderful neighborhood, and if one of my neighbors is at my door, or calling (as identified by caller ID), I will answer.
It's the unknown numbers and unidentifiable to me people that I will not answer. If the caller has an important message, they can leave it. I have no need to speak to a salesman, a Jehovah's Witness proselytizer, or someone needing a handout in a poorly disguised candy sales pitch.

I also have caller ID on my phone and if I don't recognize the number, I will not answer. If it is important, they can leave a message. It's strange, but only about 2% of the "unrecognized" callers will leave a message . . . I wonder why (not)!
Seriously, is there any job more pathetic and irritating than telemarketers? Yes, I know they are just trying to learn a living, but it must be very sad and frustrating to earn a living that means doing something that is annoying to at least 90% of one's would-be customers!

Yep, me too. No one from those unrecognized numbers ever leaves a message.
I don't answer the door unless I am expecting someone. I don't answer the door especially in the Fall on Sundays, when someone is always trying to sell me something for their school or charity. Oddly enough, I didn't get any Girl Scouts knocking on my door this year. Apparently they are now selling at the doors of supermarkets, and such.
I just moved to a new neighborhood, and for different matters I needed to talk to 2 neighbors.
Both had 2 cars on the driveway, so probably they were at home. I rang the doorbell several times (didn't hear any doorbell sound), knocked on the doors several times, but they did not come to open their door.
Is it normal? Is it some kind of defensive mechanism that people do? They purposely ignore people wanting to talk to them, or even disconnect their doorbells to not be disturbed??
We were newbies where we live now, and over the winter holidays I made several batches of cookies, cheese balls and other assorted goodies to give as gifts as a way to introduce our family to our small neighborhood. Every neighbor opened their door when we knocked (they may not have seen us before to my knowledge). Every one of them accepted our small gift and one neighbor even insisted we come in to share a glass of wine! Not everyone who knocks on your door has a bad intention. What happened to the "good ol' days"?
I don't open the door unless I know who it is. We're not in the 40's anymore! I noticed you're in California, well, I'm in Florida, so this should not come as some surprise.
...That must be it. Next time I go over, I should wear a black ski mask too.
None of my business buenos but um no, do not wear a black ski mask anywhere unless you really want to find yourself in a very bad situation, serious pain, serious trouble with law enforcement...or worse. Yes, there is a 'worse' case scenario in this.

I think it really depends where one lives; admittedly you live in a "small neighborhood", many people do not. Even if someone's intentions are not "bad" doesn't mean that anyone should be interested in what or who is on the other side of that knock/doorbell, for a wide variety of reasons.
Sadly, the "good ol' days" are long gone, not too many "Mayberry" hometowns; that ship sailed decades ago.
I don't answer my door either unless I know I have someone coming that I know. Usually, I am in my underwear or just relaxing, so I let them knock or ring the bell until they go away.
No news is good news IMO.
