We have what look like small ferns growing on a small section of our asphalt roof. This section is shaded by huge trees belonging to us and our next door neighbors. I don't think the sun ever hits this particular spot. Does anyone have any suggestions for a spray to kill these plants without hurting the roof?
Your roof isnt drying out properly and you need to have a roofing company check it out. There is plywood underneath those shingles and its a safe bet that its soaked up water like a sponge. Ferns love moisture. Dont put it off too long or youre going to have worse issues.
Just a little anecdote there was a guy that used to workout at a gym I used to work at. One day he didnt show up for a training session so the trainer called him. Turns out he had ferns growing on his roof like this and left it because he though it looked beautiful and "green." Turns out he went on his roof to get a frisbee or something like that down....he fell through the rotted roof and shattered both of his legs...

Oh no! I can assure you that is NOT going to happen. We will have that small section of the roof replaced and the rest of the roof checked and will do whatever is necessary to maintain it (except for cutting down the trees).
