If you want to get away from EVERYTHING....such as dogs barking, boom boxes playing, thumper cars, arguments....kids squealing as they play, It must be at least several/many acres...and even then, you are going to get SOME noise. You really are talking MILES of space to get rid of EVERYTHING.
Sound carries over water. I live 300 feet from a lake. At night when I'm outside, if a boat floats by, I can hear their conversations as if they were standing next to me!
This depends on the shape of the lot. My lot is almost 2 acres but it is narrow and deep so my side by side neighbors are close while my back neighbor is far away.

The key words for me in what you wrote are "when I'm outside." Well, if I'm OUTSIDE, I expect to hear some noise. It's when I'm in my HOUSE, which is supposed to be my sanctuary, that I don't want to have outsiders "intrude" on my peace and quiet.
I remember when I lived in apartments, sometimes when I would complain that someone was blasting their music, the jerk neighbors would say, "This is our apartment, we have the right to do what we want here, you can do what you want in your apartment." What they completely overlooked was that their acts and mine were not equivalent -- their blasting their music disturbed me and I'm sure many other neighbors, but my sitting in my living room reading a book disturbed NO ONE. They were trying to excuse being a**holes by pretending that I could blast my music too and they wouldn't complain -- but they knew I would not do that.
I have MOSTLY been able to get away from that attitude by living in my house in my particular neighborhood. I just cannot stand inconsiderate jerks who think whatever they want to do should be OK (which is why I am appalled by outdoor speakers, outdoor movie projectors, etc. -- WHO would ever think that those are OK?!).
The OP specifically mentions outside... He does not want any neighbor noise, even when he is outside.
Good point, Pitt Chick, I missed that.
I think not being able to hear anything when you're OUTSIDE is maybe a bit unrealistic. Then again, I guess I'm lucky in that "normal" outside noises (kids playing, someone mowing his lawn) don't bother me. But stereo noises ...
Maybe a compound like Ted Turner of thousands of acres in Montana. Rest assured no matter how much acreage in the country you would likely get the person who has ATV trails, conducts target practice with their guns, shoots off fireworks, etc.. or has a hobby that makes noise.
A corollary thought: you could be downwind of something horrendous like a chicken farm or hog farm, sewage treatment plant, or some other olfactory offensive situation, so I'll take a little nuisance noise versus a continuous nuisance smell every time. Remember it's easier to plug your ears than your nose.
