Termites are in a painted wooden bench--or at least their trails are. Maybe 5-6 total square inches of tunneled wood. I don't see the bugs or signs of present infestation, but that doesn't mean they're not there.
Desert climate. Going to put the bench out in direct sunlight for a few days and hit it with store-bought termite killer, but won't be able to pick any up for a few days. In the mean time, how far away should I keep the bench? 100 feet enough? 200 feet? Or just burn it and forget it?
If they are the common subterranean termites, moving it does nothing except maybe spread them. They live in the ground and travel into the wood of the home. I'd leave it alone until you can get your termiticide and treat the bench and surrounding area.
Just get a cheap clear plastic painters dropcloth and wrap the bench in it before putting it in the sun. In that climate, it should get hot enough to kill the termites and any eggs without any further treatment.
