I have just relocated the positions of both the toilet and the shower. Under the House I am about to connect the new shower and toilets waste back to their original sewer point under the house. I would like to know under the shower do I need to install a trap of some description so that the smells from the sewer do not come up into the bathroom if so what one. Thanks

I think this may do better if moderator moves to HOUSE section so you can get some better answers.

Also, is this a permit needed change? You will have problems if you ever plan to sell your house and your did this work w/o getting a permit - if indeed, this is a change that needed to have a permit on it.

Just a word of caution - you need to research and find out the answer b/c I do not know.

Yes, without a trap between you and the sewer you are subject to getting sewer gas which can be terribly unpleasant.

Agreed - you absolutely need a trap on the shower drain. If you don't have it already, you probably also need a vent for the shower drain as well. Otherwise, when you flush the toilet you may suck all the water out of the shower trap.

A third person saying you definitely need a trap in the shower!

As for "what one." Its a trap. There aren't brands or anything. You just want a standard p-trap.

Half of my thinks that with a questions like "do I need a trap" and "what kind of trap" you might be better off calling a plumber. You don't want to mess with sewer gases, nor do you want to mess up the plumbing in your waste lines. Ewwww!! We are die hard DIY-ers, and DH is in the trades, but we contract out plumbing work. Know your limits

I'm thinking you may be a little out of your league on the DIY thing here. Got to ditto what all the other posters are saying on this one. Codes, permits...a real plumber...
