I love stacked stone. I think it just looks really neat. We're getting a 3ft strip of stacked stone across the bottom of our house but wish they offered more on the elevation we liked. The rest is vinyl. I think I like the look of hardiplank (is that what its called) better but vinyl at least is no maintenance and for a first home that sounds good to me.

Brick
Beautiful, durable, and almost maintenance free.

I think it depends on where you live. Log cabins look out of place sometimes, as do stucco homes. Other times, they're perfect. Vinyl is final, but we call it "vinyl hiding". I just sanded and caulked my 1920s wood siding home. What a job! Looks new, now. Hurricane and other severe weather locations need some pretty tough skins. Now, if you lived in the Bronx...

anything maintenance free suits me just fine. though DH and I have considered building a log home.... that of course would not be maintenance free.

our last house was cedar ... our current one is vinyl. it used to have cedar trim, that the builder said we had to keep... but a few years later we had it wrapped in aluminum -- so we are currently 99% maintenance free.... with only the wood 'spindles' on our front porch are still wood.

I wouldnt mind brick either.... just not wood.

Brick, and yes I know people won't agree with me, painted white. Or a stucco. We did the vinyl thing and I really don't like it now. Looks cheap to me. BUT its easy maintainance.

My favorite type of house is a 1929 tudor - you know, with brick and then stucco and wood beams.

I like stone-stucco homes, and I like brick homes. My current house is a beautiful dark red brick with a hint (a hint) of maybe dark orange that is just perfect.

ICF is nice.. a little more costly, but nice..

Also like hardiplank siding, with some brick or stacked stone accents..

Anything low maintenance except the dreaded vinyl siding.
