Tile roofs are susceptible to severe roof damage during heavy winds and in combination with a hail storm. The tiles are overlapped usually nailed with one nail and if the wind catches the opposite end they'll flip up and break. Then a domino effect can happen. Getting them to match colors later on is a problem. They also have to be removed/replaced every 10-20 years (depending on the weather where you live) to replace the underlayment that deteriorates over that period of time. Then it's a complete re-roofing job only.
30/40 year fiberglass shingles hold up much better and are cheaper.

I dont think that's an issue as this is on a new build, so we have to decide between composite shingle or a level 3 hail resistant tile roof. they'll build accordingly, but we're trying to understand the price justification and if tile really is that much better in a hail storm + if tile has better insulation/heating costs associated with it?

from what i'm hearing it's mostly cosmetic and tile does a little better in a hail storm....but it depends. insurance is pretty much the same so there's no cost savings really there. That's hard to justify the extra cost for a tile roof if it's mostly cosmetic
