We just brought a very nice formal dining room set and before we begin using it, I was wondering what is the best way to protect the table from scratches and marks (from plates, utensils, etc). Someone told me that there is a scrach covering oil polish that you can buy, however what can we do to prevent marks on the wooden dining room table itself?

We've always used Murphy oil on the table. But, also, we've never eaten on a "naked" table. We have a thick pad that covers the entire table top and I use a table cloth over that. When finished, the pad folds up & is put away. Sure saves the table top! Even on my kitchen table, I bought a glass top to fit it (that stays on it) to protect the wood.

I do believe in playing it safe!

EDIT: I had to clean up how I phrased the "naked" table bit. I first wrote it as we'd never eaten on the table "naked"! LoL! Yikes! I could just hear the colorful responses on that one!

I have a felt backed vinyl cloth with a crocheted table cloth over it.

It's a beautiful Oak table... but DH prefers it covered.... so i leave it covered.

Use a table pad and tablecloth when you're eating. Don't use your table as a convenient drop-off for mail, etc.

I keep my dining room table set at all times, just to avoid that sort of thing.

We had a piece of glass made to fit our table. still shows the beauty of the wood but protects it. I originally bought table clothes and thought about doing the padding but I really like looking at the wood. I also use old english on it periodically. If there is a scratch (I have kids) it will cover it.

One thing never do is use a table naked. If she has rings it can be nasty.

I would go for the glass top over it. It is not just scratches, got to be careful of setting hot dishes on the table. Go for the glass top, table coverings over that, use the protectors for hot stuff. Never do anything naked on a table, some can collaspe.

Might put them lil stick on padded feet on the glass top too. Can't play too safe on a table top.
