Having over 35 years in house painting, I can speak with 1st hand experience on this subject. Make sure complete scope of work is mentioned, followed by total price, warranties, number of colors, type of paint, estimated number of people, estimated time to complete, and all other pieces of credentials for your determination, who you wish to employ. Did I mention insurance? Very important making sure the painting contractor is fully insured with Liability and Workers Comp. Liability in case a gallon of paint spills, and WC in case of an injury, customer and business is covered. Lastly, never pay any money upfront! That tells me and should you too, that person needs money to go buy the paint. You do not want any company not financially fit stepping foot on your property! Once you pay before job is completed, your probably in for an unfortunate surprise, and could possibly spell disaster, as you have no leverage, once paid.

I have a subscription to angies list, if I'm hiring for a job I know nothing about ( ie electrician), I get them off angies list, based on ratings and reviews.

For painters, I would also ask them how they treat outlet/switch covers, I seen many simply paint around them, when in fact you want them removed before painting. If they want to charge extra, simply remove them yourself, it's the easiest diy thing you can do.
