I use a tennis ball in my garage, suspended with a piece of fishing line.
When my windshield taps it, I know I have driven in far enough!

Really great for any new drivers in the household, too.

Maybe my tip will help prevent one of these:

Been using this for years. Effective and inexpensive. It is especially beneficial if your street/driveway situation favors backing into the garage.

Don't take this the wrong way but how do you park in a parking lot when away from home. I have never seen dangling tennis balls over parking spaces. Wouldn't it be better for everybody if you were to just to learn the edges of your car?

Parking lots don't have a door to close behind your car...

I just put a piece of 2x4 on the garage floor. I bump it with my front tire and know I'm in far enough to allow the garage door to close. Could I eyeball it? Of course.

I'm in the "draw a little line on the wall and when my eyes are even with it I'm in far enough" school of parking.

I know that when my car mirror comes alongside the ladder we have hanging on the garage wall, I'm in far enough.

I had this type of learner's aid forever and advise strongly against fishing line. Too dangerous! Make it visible!
