Might be the stupidest question of the day, but forgive me. It's sunday, so the store is closed. If a store says river rock sold by the yard, does that mean cubic yard? I can only imagine is does, but the price list just says "yard".

Thanks!

A yard is 3 feet or 36 inches and a cubic yard is the volume of a box 1 yd x 1 yd x 1 yd.

I know that. I guess it's not really going to be something that they are going to measure 3 linear feet and say ok, here you go- $50. lol. That's be like 20 rocks.

Basically, it should be about one and a half tons if they weigh it.

Yes, materials of this nature (gravel, rock, earth) are measured by the cubic yard. People are lazy though, and omit 'cubic'.

Not laziness; just a common abbreviation used in the industry.

Just thought of another answer. When you order the river rock tell the seller that you thought the price meant "for your entire yard".

Usually they have a scoop on their bobcat and its a one yard scoop, or two yard scoop.
Some rock they stack on pallets and can calculate cubic yard that way.
Still another way they sell rock is stacked in wire cages that are calculated.
