The blue line on one side goes to our RO system. The gray line on the other side goes into the fridge.
I could not figure a way to get the gray line out and ended up unscrewing just the gray line/tube with no problem. If I want it to go back in, is the gray line/tube meant to be screwed back into this connector just fine? I am terrified it might leak overnight and we wake up to a nightmare. What is this fitting called? How does the blue line come out of it?

Thanks!

Looks like a push-to-connect fitting to me. To disconnect you push in the captive sleeve and hold it while you pull the line out.

Push the collet in until it contacts the connector body, then you can pull the tubing out. I usually use my thumbnails to push the collet in, then use one hand to hold it down while using the other hand to pull the tubing out.

Today I tried doing the same with a Tee fitting for our icemaker. The damn thing was licking and I couldn't find a similar fitting (3/8x1/4x3/8) anywhere. Being wet and slippery, it resisted all my attempts to pull out the lines (working as recommended).
At one point, I had enough, pulled my knife, cut the lines (blue grey and purple) and installed a new Tee plus a reduction fitting.
These damn things are made by Watts but dont withstand pressure and start licking.

What does licking mean?

Can I simply twist the gray line back into it after I have taken it out? Will that be a secure fit?

I'm guessing he meant leaking.

If you were able to get it apart that easily it's not something I would I trust.

Is there enough slack in the tubing from the wall to reach the Refrigerator? If so just eliminate it.

There should be a nut connecting the plastic tubing to the refrigerator. Remove and note how it comes apart. This is a compression fitting, there is going to be at least one piece and probably two. Make sure if you damaged the tubing removing the old connector to cut that off with a razor knife.

If there isn't enough slack get a new coupler with compression fittings.

-----------edit:

That's looks like two size tubings in your picture, never mind about connecting it directly to fridge. They should have coompression coupler/reducer that will fit both sizes.
