Whether the fireplace is going to be too high depends on the height of the mantel, no? Some older, "modern" fireplaces were placed quite low. Some fireplaces have no raised hearth. So, situations differ. People's experiences differ.

In terms of a mantel, get the widest one you can, that still looks right for the room. Narrow mantels are a pain. Wider is better if you want to decorate or garnish them.

My concern would be about the fan that apparently runs when the gas fireplace is on--
won't that noise interfer with actually hearing the flatscreen?
unless you have it wired to other sound options???

I have a 65" tv over my fireplace. While I wouldn't necessarily choose this setup if I was having another house built, I have none of the mentioned issues with the height. No neck, eye, back strain. No headaches, fatigue, nothing. I've had the same setup (3 different tvs) since late 2003.

I sit about 11 ft. from the tv so my eyes might have to shift up a couple of degrees.

Regarding the fireplace, we've only used it when we were out of power for a few days so it wouldn't have affected the tv anyway.

Distance from the viewing point to the TV is crucial if you're going to put the TV above the fireplace. Try sticking a piece of paper where your TV would be and seeing how you feel after half an hour of looking at it - if you are still awake after all that staring! I know my neck would be killing me unless it were at least 15 feet away.

And by the way, to everyone except silibran, that thing above the fireplace is spelled MANTEL.
