I am planing to install new garage doors. Garage floor to ceiling drywall is 80.5 inch the lowest point, average is about 81 inch. Without openers, is there anyway 6'6'' garage doors could be installed? Opener is not important to me or I can put openers into joists later if I want to.

The challenge is I want 6'6'' instead of 6'3'' because I am tall person and may have tall car in the future. I talked to HD, and I was told even with quick turn bracket, they need at least 5 inch clearance which I don't have if I go with 6'6''. I hope anyone else can confirm if 6'6'' is impossible to do?

Geez. 80 inches (6'8") is the minimum allowable ceiling height by code unless you are in eaves space which can not count for egress. I do not see how you will fit even a swinging 6'6" door. A roll up door would eat up atleast 8 or 9" of space and probably more like a foot.

Is the garage on a slab or can you dig out a couple of inches to find clearance?

I see 3 choices:

Tilt door- hardware can be a bit scares to find

Carriage door- hinged from the side

Flex door- these are more commercial type units but they will work in this scenario. They're like a roll-up, but instead of actually rolling up they follow a track along the ceiling- tight against the ceiling.

All of these can be operated with openers. But it would need to be the standard chain/belt type. Which could create clerance problems. Jack shaft openers are great alternatives for clerance problems, but I think that type of opener would only work on the flex door.

Don't worry about minimum code standards for ceiling height (its a garage)- it is what it is and you're trying to find a solution.

Thank you so much for the info. I will check them out.

I found a local garage door company and they told me they have 0 clearance track that can work with 6'6'' door . Anyone heard of the 0 clearance track? does it work properly?

Yes there are "zero clerance"- but I'd use the term loosely. There can be many factors to include that make them not-so "zero clerance".

Headroom, door frame, and calculation | Architects | Garaga

The other main challenge is the size of the panels in relation to the radius of the track.
