My bathroom has a GFCI outlet that is rarely used. Last night I used a hairdryer with no problem, unplugged it, went in another room and heard a sound. I went back into the bathroom and the 'reset' button had popped out of the outlet and onto the bathroom floor. I put it back in but now it is stuck and one of the overhead bathroom lights will not turn on. The circuit panel looks normal. I assume I need to call an electrician (and I am okay with that) but I just wanted to check and make sure I am not missing something obvious. There are no other of these outlets in the bathroom. I know nothing about electricity and my husband knows even less. ;-)
If I GFCI won't reset, it sounds like it's not properly connected or energized. It would require some troubleshooting to which you admit you may not understand. Call the electrician

Will do. I am not one to mess with things I do not understand, and I have a healthy respect for electricity. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some obvious, straightforward solution before I called a professional.

They only cost $40 bucks and takes five minutes to replace. Just have your husband pop a new one in.
$40? More like $15. And those are the quality ones. I picked up a cheap one from Harbor Freight for about $7.00 earlier this year.
$40 is the stupid hardware store near my house. Home Depot or Lowes or on-line a lot less. I usually have like five minutes to do this work. And hardware store is by my train station. Beats spending $250 on an electrician.
